About me:
Greetings everyone! I am Vishal Vignesh, a third year PhD student in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Florida. I have been in Gainesville since 2016 and I have been involved with Asha for nine months now, after having heard about it from a relative and a few other friends. I currently serve as the Asha UFlorida chapter treasurer. Ever since I joined Asha, I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it and have only regretted not joining earlier. Asha has given me an opportunity to meet and work with a group of altruistic individuals, whose dedication and passion to promote education among the underprivileged and downtrodden knows no bounds. This resonated with me and I am thus delighted to be a part of the group, contributing in any which way that I can. When I’m not doing research or Asha work, I enjoy playing racquet sports, swimming, and traveling.
My Running experience
Courtesy of our fantabulous running coaches Rick Swenson and Dana Moser, who have been my source of inspiration to run, I have been regular on the Gainesville-Hawthorne trail and have had the privilege of their tutelage. I do not have much running experience in terms of marathons, and this would be my first ever 15 K, which I am very excited for. I have however, done a couple of 5K fun runs in the USA as well as in India. Besides running, I have been actively involved in badminton, tennis, squash and cricket since my high school days. I have won accolades in racquet sports, particularly badminton and tennis and continue to play racquetball on a weekly basis.
My Request
Being from a family of software professionals with a keen interest in social work, I naturally had a proclivity towards helping the needy and less fortunate from a very young age. Right from my high school days, I would assist my mother in teaching English, Science and Math to underprivileged children from government schools in India. This was indeed a very humbling experience and made me realize the importance of providing basic education for all. Asha for Education (AfE) is a secular, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to bringing about socio-economic change in India by focusing on basic education for ALL. The organization has supported more than 850 such projects across India and disbursed more than $ 25 Million in the last 20 years. This year, I would like to further Asha for Education’s mission by participating in Gate River Run 2020 and raising funds for this noble cause.
I couldn’t agree more with Nelson Mandela when he rightly said that “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. On behalf of Asha for Education Florida Chapter and the projects it supports, I would like to humbly request everyone to provide this omnipotent weapon of education to the marginalized and oppressed sections of the Indian society by making a tax-deductible donation to this cause, which could thus change their world. Thank you!
